Lyman Alpha Radiation in External Galaxies

چکیده

The Lya line of atomic hydrogen is often a luminous component of the radiation emitted by distant galaxies. Except for those galaxies which have a substantial central source of non-stellar ionizing radiation, most of the Lya radiation emitted by galaxies is generated within regions of the interstellar medium which are photoionized by starlight. Conversely, much of the energy radiated by photoionized regions is carried by the Lya line. Only hot, massive stars are capable of ionizing hydrogen in the interstellar medium which surrounds them, and because such stars are necessarily short-lived, Lya emission traces regions of active star formation.

Chemodynamics of Lyman Alpha Emitters, Lyman Break Galaxies and Elliptical Galaxies

We report an ultra-high-resolution simulation that follows evolution from the earliest stages of galaxy formation through the period of dynamical relaxation. The bubble structures of gas revealed in our simulation (< 3 × 10 years) resemble closely the high-redshift Lyman α emitters (LAEs). After 10 years these bodies are dominated by stellar continuum radiation and look like the Lyman break gal...

The Lyman continuum radiation escaping from galaxies

The Hα luminosity density of galaxies is used to calculate the local diffuse radiation field at the Lyman limit as resulting from star formation in the universe. The fraction of Lyman continuum radiation leaking out from galaxies through their neutral hydrogen is the most uncertain parameter of the calculation. A comparison of the diffuse radiation predicted from galaxies with that measured fro...

Large Area Lyman Alpha survey : finding young galaxies at z = 4 . 5

Strong Lyman-α emission is a signpost of young stars and the absence of dust and thus indicates young galaxies. To find such a population of young galaxies at z=4.5 we started the Large Area Lyman Alpha survey (LALA). This survey achieves an unprecedented combination of volume and sensitivity by using narrow-band filters on a large format (36 ×36) camera on the 4 meter telescope at KPNO. The vo...

Large equivalent width Lyman-α line emission at z=4.5: young galaxies in a young universe?

The Large Area Lyman Alpha survey has found ≈ 150 Lyman-α emitters at z=4.5. While stellar models predict a maximum Lyman-α equivalent width (EW) of 240 Å 60% of the Lyman-α emitters have EWs exceeding this value. We attempt to model the observed EW distribution by combining stellar population models with an extrapolation of Lyman break galaxy luminosity function at z=4, incorporating observati...

The Direct Detection of Lyman-continuum Emission from Star-forming Galaxies

We present the results of rest-frame ultraviolet spectroscopic observations of a sample of 14 z ∼ 3 star-forming galaxies in the SSA22a field. These spectra are characterized by unprecedented depth in the Lyman-continuum region. For the first time, we have detected escaping ionizing radiation from individual galaxies at high redshift, with two of the 14 objects showing significant emission belo...
